About This Course

The course can be undertaken in house at your premises at a time and date that suits you and up to 10 people may attend. The course is overseen by the Regulatory Authority, the EPA. The EPA set the examination for this course and a representative of the EPA may also attend the training course.

Who is this course for?

A Radiation Protection Course for Radiological Protection Officers, Supervisors and Users of Radioactive Sources. The course consists of 8 modules as follows:

  • Radiation – Basic Concepts & Types of Radiation
  • Health Effects of Ionising Radiation, Radiation Doses and Units of Dose
  • Principles of Protection from External Radiation, Time, Distance & Shielding
  • National, European and International Regulations
  • Classification, Packaging & Labelling of Radioactive Packages
  • Vehicle Types, Suitability, Equipment, Documentation & Security
  • Incidents & Accidents, Preparation for and Documentation
  • Incidents & Accidents – Practical Exercise

A written examination must be undertaken following the completion of this course. This examination is arranged by the EPA and a training certificate is issued by the Regulatory Authority following the successful completion of the course. Class 7 will be officially added to the driver training certificate following successful completion of this training. Training is valid for 5 years when refresher training must be undertaken.

Radiation Protection Adviser Services

The Radiological Protection Act, 1991 (Ionising Radiation) Regulations, 2019 (SI 30 of 2019) requires that all businesses working with sources of ionising radiation have arrangements in place for consultation with a 'Radiation Protection Adviser' on certain matters.

The Radiation Protection Adviser must be a qualified expert who has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as being a competent person to undertake this role. They must be in possession of a valid Certificate of Competence by the EPA.

There is a legal requirement under the Radiological Protection Act 1991 (Ionising Radiation) Regulations 2019 for radiation protection training for all persons who work with sources of ionising radiation or X-ray equipment.
